This is a letter from my character in the game Wanderhome – a mail delivering meerkat named Sam, to the lover he always writes and hopefully one day will meet.
Dear Roy,
I have not yet received a reply from you – maybe you sent it – and I don’t want to come across as impatient. I just send you this new letter because I made some new friends and I want to tell you about them.
Yesterday, I could finally deliver that very heavy package I wrote you about, the one I was absolutely sure must contain just some rock. Well, I know it’s against code for me to know, but the albatros I delivered it to told me himself, so I guess that doesn’t break any rule? He told me it contained weights! To train with. Poor moths who carried that package all across the lands.
Anyway, he was not the friend I met! Soon after I parted with him I saw the cutest little creature, who waved at me from a backpack. The person carrying the backpack introduced himself as Fjelmer. I was so surprised! I had been carrying a letter for a Fjelmer since the last moth tower and wasn’t able to find him yet, but there he was! He seemed to be unsure about the letter, but then when he read it, he seemed happy with it. That is what I love the most about this job: connecting people who are apart. Like you and I are apart, but connected, through the moths.
Fjelmer was traveling with Droplet (the tiny one), Lucy, Louis and Noodle, and they asked me to join, so that they could sent a letter back. I know it’s against regulations to bother people, but they didn’t seem bothered and it was actually kind of nice to have some people to join me on the road for a while. Noodle was very appreciative of my writing gear, him being a poet himself. I have even told him about my own dream of being a poet one day, and he said I should just start writing. I usually only write letters to you with this pen, so I thought maybe I can start with a little poem in a letter to you? Here it is:
The flowers they bloom
with the gathering of butterflies
like moths bringing
words from petal to petal
It’s not very good yet, I suppose, but it’s a start? Let me know what you think! I am looking forward to your response, as always.
Love,
Sam
